Functions Of Vitamin C, Vitamin C Importance
By John Adison
The best benefit vitamin C offers is aiding the formation of collagen. This is the protein substance that keeps all cells together. Vitamin C is active within the cell wall where it transforms pro-collagen into collagen. Without it, the formation is interrupted. Another benefit is that it helps iron absorption. Iron is essential to maintaining clear and healthy skin, a fresh complexion and healthy teeth. It is also necessary for the function of all glands and organs. Iron also aids in relieving both psychological and physical stress.

Humans vary greatly in their vitamin C requirement. It’s natural for one person to need 10 times as much vitamin C as another person; and a person’s age and health status can dramatically change his or her need for vitamin C. The amount of vitamin C found in food varies as dramatically as our human requirement. In general, an unripe food is much lower in vitamin C than a ripe one, but provided that the food is ripe, the vitamin C content is higher when the food is younger at the time of harvest.

Vitamin C (also referred to as ascorbic acid) is a water soluble vitamin. It is probably the most well known of all the thirteen vitamins. The discovery of ascorbic acid happened as the result of extensive research into a cure for scurvy. In 1928 two independent researchers; Albert Szent-Györgyi and Charles

G. King made the key breakthrough and managed to isolate this vitamin as the cure. The main role of vitamin C is to assist in the production of the connective tissue collagen which helps repair wounds

Vitamin C effectively protects our skin against free radicals. We develop free radicals due to exposure into sun, environmental pollution and cigarette smoking. Vitamin C promotes the production of collagen in the skin. Collagen refers to an important protein element that is essential for our skin’s firmness. So, as we can see, vitamin C encourages the production of collagen, and collagen is effective for skin toning. Thus we can easily understand how important vitamin C for skin care is.

Just so that we are all on the same wavelength, Organic Foods have to comply to a set of standards which prohibit the use of human waster, pesticides, and wait… sewage sludge. Add to that the banning of food processing with addictive’s or ionizing radiation (yes, radiation!) and we should get as close as possible to what Organic Food is supposed to be. So with all things being equal, it is important to preface this article by underlining that our “Organic” food normally contains all the nutritional supplements our body needs to perform to its optimal level, including Vitamin C and in an ideal world, we should not need supplemental nutrition.
