There are three lipoproteins in the blood stream, VLDL,LDL and HDL.
VLDL is a very low density protein,LDL is a Low density protein and HDL is a high density protein.
The two that are produced by the liver is are VLDL and HDL. The third lipoprotein LDL is produced in the blood stream from VLDL under special circumstances. Triglycerides is taken to the tissues and cells by VLDL. Some is unloaded for energy while some is stored as fat. VLDL,however, still has cholesterol ,and this is used for hormone production, nerve insulation, cell wall creation among other uses.
Too much cholesterol in the body, caused by eating too much of the wrong types of food causes cholesterol to be deposited on the walls of the arteries. Because the membrane protecting the surface of all arteries is made of fat, Cholesterol can very easily pass through these membranes. The cells of the walls of the blood vessels also shed chemical waste, that causes oxidation of the trapped LDL cholesterol. Antioxidants help preserve the LDL and prevent spoilage. If antioxidants are in the LDL ,or if it is in the surrounding area where there is trapped LDL, this oxidation or spoilage of the LDL can be prevented.
An antioxidant that is most effective in preventing this oxidation from taking place is Vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant. To be noted , iron, on the other hand, speeds up the oxidation of LDL. To make matters worse,after oxidation of LDL happens,it attracts others cells to it. These cells consume the spoiling LDL and become what is known as “foam cells”. These fill up with cholesterol and and split open when they die. During this process other factors encourage the growth of smooth muscle cells in the artery wall,causing an overgrowth of muscle. Atherosclerosis is a result of all these cellular events taking place over a number of years.
LDL is usually known as “bad Cholesterol.” It is responsible for the formation of plaque in the arterial wall. This can lead to atherosclerosis and other debilitating conditions. .
So, what is termed “good cholesterol”? HDL is responsible for taking cholesterol back to the liver. It is made by the liver and intestines and carries very little fat. Of all the lipoproteins, it is the most soluble and transports very easily. It is known as the “Good Cholesterol”. HDL is able to transport VLDL back to the liver before it can convert into LDL. HDL can also inhibit the oxidation process of LDL thus preventing the spoiling of LDL.
An over supply of LDL in the blood stream can be alleviated by consuming less overall fat and calories. However, you should also take steps to increase HDL (Good Cholesterol) levels ,independently of cholesterol count. Losing some weight can trigger this. It can lead to a decrease in triglycerides and an increase in HDL. A reduction in LDL can also be gained when one stops smoking. Vitamin E can also help prevent oxidation of LDL,as mentioned before. Exercising also has great benefits,for it also increases HDL production and lowers total cholesterol.
In the battle to stop atherosclerosis multiple approaches work best.There is no single magic bullet.
